The Land
Fuvahmulah gave us the first rule, without anyone writing it down: build for the island, not on top of it. The rooftop pools weren't a design flourish borrowed from somewhere glossier — they came from a very local, very practical fact, which is that the best view on a flat coral island is always the one above the tree line. The rooms at Cozy Roots are modest by design, twelve feet by thirteen, because the point was never the square footage. It was what you could see and hear from inside them: palm canopy, the sea somewhere close, a rooftop terrace one floor up if you wanted more sky.
Cozy Deck, our own restaurant back at Cozy Nest, grew out of the same instinct — if you're going to feed the people staying with you, you might as well do it yourself, and do it like you mean it.
The Sea
You cannot talk about Fuvahmulah without talking about what's in the water. This island sits on one of the very few reef systems anywhere where tiger sharks aren't a rare sighting but a resident presence — divers come from the other side of the world for a few minutes near them. We built Fuvahmulah Scuba Club because it felt dishonest to run a guesthouse a few hundred meters from that and not put guests in the water properly, with the right guides and the right respect for what they're diving with.
That closeness to the reef shaped more than the dive center. It's why the "unhurried" part of what we do isn't a tagline so much as a schedule — tide times and boat times set the rhythm of a day here more than any front-desk clock does.
The Soul
Somewhere in the middle of running two properties on one island, the bigger idea arrived: what if this didn't stop at Fuvahmulah? Not because Fuvahmulah stopped mattering — if anything, the opposite — but because the same instinct that built Cozy Nest and Cozy Roots seemed worth testing somewhere else, on an island with its own entirely different character.
That's what took us to Dhangethi, where Cozy Arts is bringing the same spirit — real hospitality, close to the water, without a resort-island script — to a place known for its own craft and culture rather than its sharks.
It won't stop at two islands either. The plan was never to own one perfect address. It was to build a family of them — each one distinct, each one shaped by the island underneath it, all of them recognizably, unmistakably Cozy. That's the part of the story still being written, and it's the reason this Journal exists: to tell it as it happens, one island, one story, one dive, one quiet rooftop evening at a time.
